Waar wordt de huidige St. Martinuskerk voor het eerst vermeld?
Het koor is het oudste gedeelte van de kerk. De eerste vermelding van de bouw van de Martinuskerk zoals we die nu kennen, dateert uit 1456. In dat jaar melden het stadsbestuur en het kerkbestuur van Weert aan het kapittel van Sint Servaas in Maastricht dat zij een nieuw koor hebben gebouwd aan het schip van de oude kerk die op deze plek stond. Samen met de graaf van Horne is het kapittel eigenaar van de Martinuskerk in Weert. Zij verwaarlozen het gebouw tot ergernis van de burgers van Weert. Uit de brief uit 1456 blijkt dat zij het heft in eigen hand hebben genomen en een deel van de oude kerk zonder toestemming hebben afgebroken. Zonder deze burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid was onze kerk er nooit geweest.

Where is the present Martinus Church first mentioned?
The first mention of the construction of the Martinus Church as we know it today dates back to 1456.
The choir is the oldest part of the church. In 1456 the city council and the church council of Weert reported to the chapter of Sint Servaas in Maastricht that they had built a new choir on the nave of the old church that stood in this spot. Together with the Count of Horne, the chapter owns the Martinuskerk in Weert. Much to the annoyance of the citizens of Weert they neglect the building. The letter from 1456 shows that they have taken matters into their own hands and have demolished part of the old church without permission. Without this civil disobedience, our church would never have existed.
