Herkent u de 12 apostelen?
Langs de linker en rechter zijmuur van de kerk is een indrukwekkende serie barokke houten apostelbeelden te zien. Zij zijn in het midden van de 19de eeuw gemaakt door een Antwerpse beeldhouwer. Een dergelijke serie beelden komt in België vaker voor dan in Nederland. Op oude afbeeldingen is te zien dat de beelden ooit wit geschilderd waren. Ieder beeld is anders. De apostelen zijn herkenbaar aan hun attributen. Helaas hangen ze hoog en mede door de lichtinval is het wat moeilijk te zien welke apostel is afgebeeld. Maar sommige zijn toch wel goed te herkennen. Wilt u een poging wagen, dan helpt wellicht een opsomming van de apostelen en hun attributen.
Apostelen en hun attributen
De twaalf apostelen (of discipelen, leerlingen van Jezus) met tussen haakjes de attributen waarmee ze afgebeeld worden:
Petrus (sleutels); Andreas (vis(net) en Andreaskruis); Jacobus de Meerdere (jakobsschelp, pelgrimsattributen); Johannes (adelaar, schrijfmateriaal, kelk of ketel); Filippus ((zwaard, lans, steen, slang of kruis); Bartolomeüs (afgestroopte huid of mes); Matteüs (mens of engel, zwaard, geldbuidel of telraam); Thomas (zwaard, lans, steen, slang of kruis); Jacobus de Mindere (volderstang); Taddeüs (zwaard, bijl, hellebaard of knots); Simon (boek en zaag) en Judas Iskariot (geld(buidel) of strop).

Along the left and right side walls of the church is an impressive series of Baroque wooden apostle statues.They were made in the mid-19th century by an Antwerp sculptor. Such a series of statues is more common in Belgium than in the Netherlands. Old pictures show that the statues were once painted white. Each statue is different. The apostles are recognisable by their attributes. Unfortunately they hang high up and partly because of the light, it is somewhat difficult to see which apostle is depicted. But some of them are still easy to recognise. If you want to give it a try, perhaps a list of the apostles and their attributes will help.

Peter (keys); Andrew (fish (net) and St Andrew’s cross); James the Greater (scallop, pilgrim’s attributes); John (eagle, writing material, chalice or cauldron); Philip ((sword, lance, stone, serpent or cross); Bartholomew (stripped skin or knife); Matthew (man or angel, sword, money pouch or abacus); Thomas (sword, lance, stone, serpent or cross); James the Lesser (volder rod); Taddeus (sword, axe, halberd or club); Simon (book and saw) and Judas Iscariot (money (pouch) or noose).
