Wat is het oudste, nog bestaande gilde in Nederland?
Dit altaar is een van de meer recente onderdelen van de St. Martinuskerk. Het is ingezegend in 1987. Het is opgericht in opdracht van het eeuwenoude Weerter Timmermansgilde. Het is een ontwerp van pater Gerard Mathot. De panelen zijn uit blank hout gesneden.
Het Weerter Timmermansgilde , alias De Twaalf Apostelen, bestaat sinds 1464. Daarmee is dit het oudste nog bestaande gilde van Nederland. Graaf Jacob I van Horne verleende destijds het privilege voor oprichting in een periode waarin Weert een grote economische bloei doormaakte. De originele stichtingsoorkonde ligt in de archieven van de gemeente Weert.
Vier keer per jaar houdt het gilde een vergadering en de jaarlijkse feestdag van het gilde valt op 19 maart.

Because in the second building phase the buttresses were placed more to the outside, space was created inside for confessional chapels and altars, for example for the guilds of Weert. This is the altar of the Weert carpenters’ guild.
This altar is one of the more recent parts of St Martinus Church. It was consecrated in 1987. It was commissioned by the centuries-old Weert Carpenters’ Guild. It was designed by Father Gerard Mathot. The panels are carved from blank wood.
This Carpenters’ Guild, known as The Twelve Apostles, has existed since 1464. This makes it the oldest existing guild in the Netherlands. Count Jacob I van Horne granted the founding privilege at a time when Weert was booming economically. The original founding charter is in the archives of the municipality of Weert.
The guild holds a meeting four times a year and its annual feast day falls on 19 March.
