Wie legde de eerste steen van de St. Martinuskerk?
Deze eerste steen van het kerkgebouw is gelegd op 21 juli 1500. Alleen het koor van de kerk is ouder (gebouwd rond 1456 aan de oude kerk die vroeger op deze plek stond).
De tekst van deze steen luidt:
int gulden yaer van vijftienhondert
is broke dy alde kerck u niet en wondert
en op avunt Magdaleen
is gelacht dy yeerste steen
Uit een post van de gemeenterekening van 1500 blijkt deze steen door Jacob II, graaf van Horne, gelegd te zijn. Zo wordt ook de aanwezigheid van het wapenschild van de Van Horne’s verklaard.
Een soortgelijk wapenschild is ook verwerkt in de ornamenten rond het beeld van St. Martinus direct boven de hoofdingang.

Who laid the foundation stone of the St. Martinus Church
This foundation stone of the church building was laid on 21 July 1500. Only the choir of the church is older (built around 1456 next to the old church that used to stand on this site).
The text of this stone reads:
int gulden yaer of fifteen hundredt
is broke dy alde kerck u niet en wondert
and on avunt Magdaleen
has been laid dy yeerste steen
An entry in the municipal financial accounts of 1500 shows that this stone was laid by Jacob II, Count of Horne. This also explains the presence of the Van Horne’s coat of arms.
A similar coat of arms is also incorporated in the ornaments around the statue of St Martin directly over the main entrance.
